Walker Bay Recycling

Walker Bay Recycling (WBR) opened in 1989 and has been recycling paper, glass, plastics and metal from private and commercial sources in and around Hermanus.  WBR also acts as a buy back centre.  The Recycling operation moved to its existing premises in 2001. The Hermanus Transfer has been specifically located to allow for the eventual link-up between the transfer station and WBR.  The quantity of recycled waste presently being handled by WBR is 1900 tons per year. WBR has a staff compliment of 13 permanent staff and employs an additional 5 casual workers.

Kwasa-Kwasa Swop Shop

The Recycling Swop Shop was started in May 2003 at the Hou Moed shelter in Kwasa-Kwasa and it is the brainwave of local residents Marilyn van der Velden and Bulelwa Sam.

The swop shop allows young children the opportunity of collecting recyclable material and exchanging the value for credit points. Once sufficient credits are achieved they can be redeemed for selected household goods, toiletries, toys, clothing and school stationary.

Much of the goods available have been sponsored by local businesses and foreign visitors.  Already 400 children have been registered at the Recycling Swop Shop and from May 2003, 24 000 kg of recyclable material has been collected.

Recyclables are taken to Walker Bay Recycling.

Apart from all the indirect benefits of recycling, it is estimated that the recycling operations currently underway in the Overstrand provide the Municipality with a direct savings in transport and disposal costs of R 180 000/yr and provides a combined annual income in excess of R350 000/yr to previously unemployed members of the less affluent local community based on 2004 figures.
